Details of Bluesky’s New Authentication System

Bluesky, which is set to launch publicly in early 2024, previously used a self-authentication system based on custom domains in usernames. Now, with the introduction of the new system, accounts that are reputable and well-known by the Bluesky team will be verified by default and receive a blue checkmark. These accounts include government officials, journalists, media outlets, and celebrities.

In addition, Bluesky has introduced the concept of “trusted verifiers.” In this model, reputable organizations such as the New York Times and WIRED can verify users associated with them. Accounts verified by these entities will have a blue checkmark with a blue border. By clicking on the blue checkmark, users can see which organizations have verified the account.

Currently, there is no public application for the Blue Tick, but Bluesky has announced that it will launch a public application form once the system is stabilized.

Comparison with other platforms

Bluesky’s move contradicts recent policies of Platform X (formerly Twitter), which changed its authentication system to a paid model after being acquired by Elon Musk. While X allows users to earn Blue Ticks by paying a fee, Bluesky has emphasized that Blue Ticks are only awarded to authentic and verified accounts and cannot be purchased.

Impact on users and platform security

As the number of users and prominent figures join Bluesky, concerns about impersonation have also increased. The new authentication system is designed to reduce these concerns and create a safer environment for users. It also allows users to interact with official accounts with more confidence.

Conclusion

Bluesky’s introduction of the Blue Tick authentication system demonstrates the platform’s commitment to user security and trust. By combining formal authentication with verification by trusted entities, Bluesky has taken an important step towards combating identity fraud and increasing transparency.
